| Join us for TIRRC's Sixth Annual Membership Convention Join us for TIRRC's Sixth Annual Convention, a day when Tennessee's immigrant, refugee, and ally communities have the opportunity to attend skill-building workshops covering areas such as Leadership and Communications; decide on the priority state and local issues for the year to come; and together develop strategies to advance the rights of immigrants in Tennessee. We hope that you'll stick around afterwards for great food and music at the Cultural Celebration!
Registration is free to all members and includes all Convention materials, attendance at general sessions and workshops, lunch and the Cultural Celebration.

English-only Petition Defeated in Court If anyone thought the Davidson County Courthouse was the sole site of English-only combat, they would be wrong. In the three months since Metro Councilman Eric Crafton and a group dubbed Nashville English First revived the city's language debate, a coalition quietly has been making plans to quash what its roughly 100 members see as a divisive and damaging measure. Members of Nashville for All of Us range from lawyers to clergymen, private individuals to public officials and business leaders to nonprofit directors. Immigrant Mother Suffers at the Hands of Nashville Law Enforcement It started when Juana Villegas, an illegal immigrant from Mexico who was nine months pregnant, was pulled over by a police officer in a Nashville suburb for a routine traffic violation. By the time Mrs. Villegas was released from the county jail six days later, she had gone through labor with a sheriff’s officer standing guard in her hospital room, where one of her feet was cuffed to the bed most of the time. County officers barred her from seeing or speaking with her husband. After she was discharged from the hospital, Mrs. Villegas was separated from her nursing infant for two days and barred from taking a breast pump into the jail, her lawyer and a doctor familiar with the case said.
