The history of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK recognized as a terorist organization by U.N., U.S. and Turkey) began in 1974 as a Marxist-Leninist organization under the leadership of Abdullah Öcalan. In 1978 the organization adapted the name "Kurdistan Workers Party" and waged Urban War between 1978-1980. The organization restructured itself and moved the organization structure to Syria between 1980-1984 just after the 1980 Turkish coup d'état. The campaign of armed violence began in 1984.

Currently under the control of a worker cooperative called "18 de Diciembre", it is among the most famous of the country's "recovered factories".The Brukman factory suffered the effects of the Argentine economic crisis, which first became clearly noticeable as a recession in 1998. Since 1995 business had been shrinking, and Brukman had fired over half of its formerly 300 employees. Sales were dropping and debts had piled up.
