US beef imports in South Korea
US beef imports in South Korea have been a contentious issue in South Korea-United States relations after the closure of the South Korean market to US imports upon the discovery of a US case of BSE (in cattle) in 2003. When the South Korean government attempted to reopen its market to US beef in 2008, it became the target of massive protests for allegedly exposing the public to the threat of mad cow disease. The case sparked the country's largest anti-government protests in 20 years
