ILWU and PMA agree on contract terms The 2008 Coast Negotiating Committee reached terms of understanding on an MOU the week of August 11, 2008. The ILWU Coast Negotiating Committee reached final terms on a Memorandum of Understanding for a new contract on July 28, 2008. The MOU is being reviewed by Coast Caucus delegates the week of August 18-22, and will be sent to the membership for review and a vote if approved by the Caucus. ILWU Sec.-Treas. addresses 2008 graduates in Tacoma Adams at Bates College graduation, 2008 ILWU International Secretary-Treasurer Willie Adams with graduate Hailey Hecker who received her Associate of Technology Degree from Bates Technical College in Tacoma on June 13, 2008. Adams was asked to deliver commencement address. He congratulated hundreds of grads who ranged in age from to 17 to 70 years that will use their new skills in dozens of occupations including longshoring. Adams urged graduates to “take pride in your blue collar roots,” and “tackle the problems that America faces, including ending the war in Iraq, providing health care for all Americans, and creating more good-paying “green jobs” that can support working families in Tacoma.” | ILWU President Chosen for International Position ILWU's Familathe and Adams accept ITF title for Pres. McEllrath. The Dockers Section of the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) represents over 400,000 dockworkers in 190 unions from 100 countries. The group gathered in Stockholm, Sweden on June 16-19, 2008 to coordinate strategy and solidarity efforts, share information, and elect new leadership for the coming years. ILWU International President Bob McEllrath was nominated to serve as 2nd Vice Chair of the ITF Dockers Section by President Richard Hughes of the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA). More than 100 delegates voted unanimously to approve McEllrath who was unable to attend due to the Longshore Contract negotiations in San Francisco, but ILWU Secretary Treasurer Willie Adams was on hand to accept the nomination and thank delegates who also passed a resolution pledging their full support and solidarity for the ILWU’s Longshore Contract negotiations. | ILWU-PMA Joint Statement on Tentative Agreement San Francisco (July 28, 2008) – After a marathon weekend bargaining session, leaders from the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) and the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) announced a preliminary agreement on terms for a new six year contract covering more than 25,000 dockworkers at 29 West Coast ports. The leaders shook hands in San Francisco over the proposed agreement on Monday.
